Needless to say my uncle and aunt were less then pleased with my attempts at magic, since they usually resulted in large holes in the ground and big messes that needed cleaning up. The temperamental streams of magic that were felt in Bordertown were not helping me master my magic either. Finally my aunt Relkaea asked around and found a Guide for me. Guides are really old elves that take on students and help them learn to control and master their magic.
My Guide lived out in the country, not quite Bordertown, but not quite my beloved NeverNever either. It was full of life though with lots of plants and trees, lots of animals and fresh air, and lots and lots of work to do. At least I had Swift there with me to help, though he did more running around and chasing butterflies then help, really.
Full Body
My Guide's name is Errala. She is an elder elf who left the forest of NeverNever to live where the worlds of the Faerie and the Real meet. She says it makes her potions more potent. Eralla also has a pet cat named Telerin, though Eralla says he's less of a pet and more of a surveyor that allows Eralla to live on the farm.
Eralla took me under her wing and told me the best way to learn how to focus one's magic was to learn how to focus one's mind first. Apparently that means you have to sweep the paths, beat the rugs, weed the garden, and of course help harvest the fruits and vegetables for Errala's potions and poultices. I don't know if it helps me focus, but it certainly makes me tired enough to go straight to sleep at night.
Mentor
I go to work for my Guide three times a week for most of the day, but today Errala said she had a surprise for me. I had been working so hard for her and doing so well she wanted me to have a bit of a treat. Imagine my surprise when I looked over my shoulder to find Calle standing there! My Guide says that, while Calle did not have enough magic to focus it into a spell, she still had other gifts worth cultivating. But first, we could take a break!
Close Up
Calle and I headed to the barn to lay on the straw and swap stories about Eralla and the things she was teaching us. When Telerin came in Calle got a sly smile on her face and reached into her pocket. She pulled out some green stuff that looked and smelled kind of funny. Telerin took an immediate interest in what she had in her hand and came over and sniffed at where Calle had poured some out on the ground. It was catnip! When I asked Calle where she got it she just smiled and said something about gifts worth cultivating. Before I knew it Telerin started acting really weird and went from the stern stuffy cat he had been before to a goofy hyper cat that had Calle and I in fits we were laughing so hard. I don't think this is what Errala had in mind when she told us to take a break!
Freestyle
No, it was definitely not what Errala had in mind. So she said it was time to move on to work that was a little more challenging. She pointed to one of the huge wheels of straw out in the field and said I was to take it into the barn. How was I supposed to do that, it was nearly twice as tall as I was! She said she thought it was time for me to practice my magic.
Freestyle
When I summoned my magic this time the clouds of blue and pink seemed much more centered around me. Instead of getting swept away in the amazing, terrifying, wonderful feelings I grabbed hold of them and focused them on that wheel of hay. Hard.
Freestyle
Um, too hard. Once Calle shook the hay off she started to laugh at me. Swift soon poked his nose out from where he was covered in hay too. My Guide hadn't moved, but I could see her lips twitching. There may not have been a crater this time, which is an improvement, but it still looks like I have a lot more focusing to do. Eralla went and fetched me a rake.
