When Aunt Relkaea told me we would be spending the last month of summer in a distant land I thought it would be the best adventure yet! She said it would be a suprise so no matter how many times or how many different ways I tried to ask my aunt and uncle where we were going they always just smiled and shook their head. I figured we would journey for days on end, maybe even to the other side of the world of the Real! I thought we'd get to put our hair in cool 'dos and wear pure white clothing and participate in special rituals of a foreign land. How cool would that be?

Yeah. That didn't happen. It still turned out to be an amazing adventure! What my aunt and uncle didn't tell me was the path back to the world of the Faerie was now safe. The War had ended. They wanted to suprise me and take me back home for a whole month to celebrate the Time of Change from summer to fall. A very sacred time for our people. It was amazing! We arrived at the Sacred Grotto, located just to the other side of the forest of NeverNever, right when the festivities were about to start. The Grotto is a series of stone walls and columns from the days when man walked freely among the elves that is now open to the air and the sun and the elves.

It took several days to get there and after that last long days hike I was thirsty! While my aunt and uncle went to greet old friends I snuck over to a fountain that had beautiful cascades of clear, sparkling water and extended my cupped hand for a drink. After taking several mouthfuls I saw my uncle start to look for me. When he came over he looked at the fountain and then back at me kinda worried. He asked me if I had touched the water. When I shook my head no, he said good because the water here in the Sacred Grotto does funny things to people. Uh-oh. I hope I don't get in trouble! I was just so thirsty!

While the adults talked, the kids were gathering around the brush fire. It had been so long since I had been around so many of my kind I was eager to join them. Imagine my suprise when I saw a boy with very light blonde hair! Normally my people have hair that is shades of red. I don't care what color people's hair is normally, but this boy's was so very different. It almost seemed to shimmer in the sunlight, like spun gold. I think I stared at his hair for too long because he got huffy and stomped over to me and asked me if I had a problem. I said no, but he was so touchy about his hair that he seemed to think my no might as well have been a yes. To the delight of all the other kids he challenged me to a Duel. A duel of magic. I'd only read about Duels, I'd certaintly never been in one! But, I wasn't about to let the name Iirlanth down!

We squared off against each other on the far side of the Grotto where we were sure the adults wouldn't find us. I took a deep breath and tried my best to relax and focus just like Eralla taught me to. I glared at this boy, whose name I didn't even know! Why did he have to start things like this? I didn't mean anything by it when I looked at his stupid hair! I closed my eyes and gathered my magic to me... and that's when everything went pear shaped.
A loud KA-BOOM went off and all of a sudden jolts of magic started going through me in short bursts. It flowed out of my arms in the form of bolts of electicity that were blue and green, I wasn't the only one having problems, the boy's magic also was flowing out of him the same way. When it locked onto mine it created a never ending flow, Calle would have called it a circuit. Our magic flowed back and forth between us in circles of electricity whose sound became higher and higher pitched as it went. I thought I heard my aunt behind me gasp and my uncle Tylesh shout. Then I blacked out.

When I came to, it was to find out that the boy and I were the talk of the Grotto. Apparently I wasn't the only one who had snuck a drink at one of those beautiful fountains, the boy had too! The elders said they were suprised I had maintained control of so much magic for so long and were impressed when they heard I was being taught by Eralla. They said I still had a lot to learn, and my first lesson was to stay away from the sacred water!

My aunt and uncle said that I was in a lot of trouble. But, that for the duration of the vacation I could stay and celebrate my heritage and hopefully mend bridges with the boy who I had so insulted. Of course, as soon as we got back to Bordertown I was going to be grounded. Big time.
My uncle said he had no idea why I was looking at some boy's hair in the first place. Then my aunt got this sly smile on her face and said she thought she knew. She asked me, didn't that elf from those books I liked so much have blonde hair? What was his name again? Leggless? Oh I was so embarrased. I could see my uncle Tylesh's lips start to twitch and he told me my leaves were burning, then my aunt Relkaea started to giggle. And, I just know some of the other elves heard what they said too! I said I didn't care what color hair that stupid boy had! But, I couldn't be heard over my aunt's and uncle's laughter.
